Here’s The Texan Behind The PreachersNSneakers Instagram Account
The creator of the wildly popular PreachersNSneakers Instagram account has finally come forward. The Instagram account PreachersNSneakers has only been around for a few years, but in that time the account has amassed over 241 thousand followers and plenty of articles dissecting the spending of celebrity pastors.
In case you're not familiar, PreachersNSneakers shows pictures of celebrity pastors, also known as "Hypepriests," and highlights just how much their designer clothes and specifically shoes are worth. This has led many of these Hypepriests to have to publicly defend themselves to their congregations as to why they feel the need to spend $5,000 on a pair of sneakers instead of putting that money towards a more charitable cause.
Many have wondered who the person behind the account could be, and what their intentions were when the account was initially made. Now, we know who he is and he has a new book out
According to a new article in the Washington Post, Ben Kirby is from Dallas, Texas, and is the man behind the PreachersNSneakers Instagram account. He has a new book out, PreachersNSneakers: Authenticity in an Age of For-Profit Faith and (Wannabe) Celebrities. In the article, Kirby discussed how he started wondering how much these men of faith were getting paid after he noticed the megachurch's musician in $800 Yeezys. That was almost as much as Kirby was paying a month in rent.
Kirby also says he noticed Steven Furtick, the pastor of Elevation Worship in Charlotte was in a new designer outfit weekly. He then started the Instagram account and in a month he had over 100,000 followers. Clearly, Kirby wasn't the only one interested in how much these church leaders were being paid.
Since then, the account has grown to hundreds of thousands of followers and now includes a Youtube channel, a merchandise store, podcast, and it just keeps growing. You can read the entire article at the Washington Post website.
