Times are tough and some New Mexicans are becoming sugar babies to help make ends meet during the pandemic. With so many Americans losing their jobs, being faced with mounting medical bills, and financial uncertainty, some New Mexicans are getting creative when it comes to dating and paying their bills.

Sugar dating website Seeking Arrangements reported a 72% increase in users from the Land of Enchantment, according to KOB 4 News in New Mexico. In case you're not familiar, sugar dating is when young, attractive men and women, also known as sugar babies, date older, wealthy sugar daddies. These sugar daddies help out their babies financially with everything from tuition, bills, rent, and other expenses.

Seeking Arrangement spokeswoman Kimberly De La Cruz said the company has seen record-breaking increases of people using the dating site. Between March and June there was a 72% increase in sign-ups to their website compared to the same time period in 2019, according to KOB 4 News. De La Cruz said the site thinks more people are signing up for their site since the quarantine can be especially hard for singles stuck home alone.

“People are having a say in what they want and what they’re looking for, and they refuse to settle. They want to come to a site like [Seeking Arrangement] and meet somebody who can pickup the check at dinner and build a life with them where you’re not going to be struggling.”
